A Summer of Sculpture
Keith Pettit joined us several years ago, just as he received a major commission funded by Rother District Council and The European Union. Their brief was to create and site sculptures along the 31-mile 1066 Country Walk which begins at Pevensey Castle and ends in Rye, East Sussex . It was a dream job for Keith, bringing together his love of history and his practice of working in found Sussex wood.
While Keith kept in touch about the progress of the ten sculptures, which were created during the pandemic, it wasn’t until May of 2024 that Sarah, family and friends put three days aside to walk the rural trail. ‘The sculptures were a delight, weathered and taking their place in the landscape. We missed a few (busy walking and talking), as they were so quietly embedded,’ says Sarah. ‘The ones we encountered spoke beautifully to their surroundings. This is what we love about Keith’s work.’
There was more to come: Keith delivered five sculptures for the garden which were exhibited during the September Artwave festival. These were more garden-scale pieces and visitors were able to appreciate how much they set off summer planting in a home setting.
